I just wanted to say thank you for the services that you provide! I just listened to your interview on Canary Cry and it was so touching and important. My 14 year old son right now is obsessed with the military, and has a plan for joining and I am going to have him listen to your whole story so that maybe he can get a bigger picture of what goes on…I have been thrilled with the discipline he has learned in jrotc, and he has a higher level of respect than previously in his life, but I wanted to ask you for your personal opinion; do you think I should nurture this dream and let him go through it (not that I have a huge choice in the matter at this point)or should I encourage him towards other options? I agree with what you said in your interview though that pain makes us who we are…I am a nurse and I have seen SOOO many suicides lately, and I don’t in any way wish that for my child. Thoughts? Ideas? I do trust that the Lord will lead him down the right path. And if it’s to go to war, I can take it because I also believe that this world is not all there is…but I’m glad that there are people out there like you that are addressing this huge need we have (working with young/all ages vets)! 🙂
Sarah thank you so much for asking that question and all of your appreciation! Thanks 1 million for the kind words and egg knowledge meant you shared in your post!
As to your question I would say… It is an extremely, extremely difficult position to be in an something that I can only imagine at this point because I have no children. I do however understand one half of the coin because my mother and father both tried quite seriously to keep me out of the Marine Corps. At the end of our initial conversation on the topic I found myself halfway dangling from a balcony. LOL
At the end of the day I guess what is most important is your son’s relationship with God. As men we want to do many different things for many different reasons and lots of them have to do with our own desire to attain manhood in a manner that cannot be disputed or question. Either way, it is his relationship with the father that’s going to get him through an enlistment in the military fighting forces of our country. Without God he simply rolling the dice, not only on his life but also on his mental and spiritual health as well.
I would press upon him the absolute importance of a solid relationship with God before going off to fight. I would vehemently encourage him to ask God if it’s what he has planned for your sons life and to give him signs to verify it. I would make sure and instill in him the understanding that his strength does not come from his physical ability but rather from the spirit that God has given to him and that is with him always no matter what happens.
If he feels in his heart it’s what he needs to do then it’s what he needs to do but I would encourage him to be sure to do it with God in the forefront of his mind because he will surely need it more than any of us probably realize right now.
In the end, we can’t protect anyone… We can’t even save our lives. Everything we know can be taken away from us in a moment. So all we can do is pray like you said. The main thing is to make sure that he puts his trust in God concerning this and especially if he goes through with this, then it will strengthen their relationship and give him experiences with God that no one will ever be able to take away from him no matter what happens on his life’s path. I hope I gave you some valuable information in this answer sarah.
God is faithful and what the enemy intends for evil truly will be utilized for good as long as we put our trust in the right places as you know. If nothing else that is one thing that hopefully is depicted accurately within my personal story.
I’m honored that you asked and feel free to continue asking anything but bear with me for any spelling and grammar mistakes please. I literally shot this straight from my cell phone this time. ?
